The Wakkerstroom Natural Fibre Handicraft Fair is in its 5th year of existence and is an exciting forum where people from around South Africa can meet, display their goods and learn more about working with their hands and using natural and organic materials.

The Fair provides craft enthusiasts with the information, ideas, and inspiration they need to support their desire for self-sufficiency, sustainability and a natural lifestyle.

The stall holders and visitors are people who consciously choose natural materials for their handwork projects because of aesthetics, quality, personal health and the environment. The Fair aims to inform and inspire visitors to choose Mother Nature’s supplies whether they create their own or buy ready-made handwork.

Visitors can expect to find a wide array of natural fibre and hand-craft products including toys, apparel, home items, gifts, and seasonal crafts.

Fair Venue

The Wakkerstroom Church - Venue for the Natural Fibre Handcraft Fair

The Wakkerstroom Church stands proud in the middle of the village and its spire can be seen wherever you go in the Wakkerstroom valley.
The cornerstone of this grand old building was laid in 1888 and completed in 1892.
With a facade of white sand stone, quarried from Newcastle it truly is a unique bit of South African history.
Today there are 300 members in this very active church who travel long distances from outlying farms to attend services.
The Fair is proud to be associated with such an integral piece of South African history

About Wakkerstroom

Wakkerstroom is a small village situated in a beautiful valley in Mpumalanga on the border of Natal. It is an area steeped in history and has just celebrated its 150 year anniversary.

It is also a birding area of international importance and has many rare, endangered and endemic species such as the blue crane and the wattled crane.

Its endless grasslands stretch on forever and the ever changing weather makes Wakkerstroom a living breathing canvass.

Wakkerstroom makes you feel welcomed from the moment you step into town. Treat yourself to a drink at the Mucky Duck, Pasta Putanesca at the Garrett, bird watching with Lucky or petting an Al Paca at the Roost. Art classes, hiking, scenic drives, glass blowing, shopping or visiting the headquarters of BirdLife South Africa to find out more about this exceptionally important biding area will all make for a memorable visit.

With its plethora of quaint guest houses and hotels Wakkerstroom makes for a fascinating place perfect for weekends away from Johannesburg

Mistique Al Pacas

Mystique Al Pacas was started in 2008 by Fenella and Romney van Ryneveld who left the big city life of Johannesburg to pursue a more wholesome life in the small little birding village of Wakkerstroom on the border of Natal, South Africa.

They started with a small group of 5 Al Pacas which has now grown to a healthy herd of 12. Fenella is passionate about Al Paca's, natural fibre and hand crafts of old. She shears, cards and spins the natural Al Paca fibre herself and sells handspun yarn of not only Al Paca but of a variety of other natural fibres such as merino and bamboo out of her little home shop.

Hand crocheted products such as this beautiful shawl and beret pictured below are also available. Seldom do we know where our clothes come from, but in this instance Crystal; Fen's daughter is pictured here with the Al Paca that produced this beautiful fleece .... Sweetie Pie the chocolate brown Al Paca.

Articles have been written about the Wakkerstroom Al Pacas in a variety of publications and recently Fen and Romney were featured on a local TV show called Pasella.

Fen offers spinning demonstrations and spinning workshops in Wakkerstroom and she is also the
creator of the annual Natural Fibre Handcraft Fair held in Wakkerstroom each year.
